New Driftboat Manufacturer

A new drift boat manufacturer, Stealth Craft, made a big splash at the 2012 Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ this weekend. Brief questions with the gentleman manning the craft suggested that it was nearly infinitely configurable. The size large drifter was outfitted with substantial seating, a DeYoung paint job, bottle openers at each oar lock, floor mounted-flush beverage holders, headlights, under ledge accent lighting, diamond plate accents, an electric anchor lift and a charging port for smart phones / iPads. It also contained the usual appointments of rod holders, leg braces and storage.

When queried about other electrical options the promoter stated that switches for electrical components, including the anchor, could be placed within the oar handles and that the battery capacity exceeded 8 hours of continuous operations.

As I looked on only a few additional options came to mind; a mini-fridge, heated seats, a PA system, electric water cannon with oar mounted targeting system, kegerator and underwater camera came to mind. Now that would be a fine vessel!

Had a nice showing from the Minions yesterday at the S.C. The Burg, Camoflagwick, Heavyporchstreet and The Tang were represented. A few nice fish were landed but mostly we were trying to shake hangovers. Curli got into a fine mutant specimen after Coach assisted with fly selection.

Saturday Night in Millheim

After an afternoon spent exploring State College, no JoePa sightings, my lovely wife and I dropped by TCO to pick up the 2nd edition of Paul Weamer's "Flyfishing Guide to the Delaware River." Paul was working and was glad to autograph it. Now I have to pretend that I don't know about it Christmas morning.
After departing TCO we traveled toward Millheim on 45 to find a parking space near Elk Creek Cafe. We noticed an interesting looking gallery across the street from the previously mentioned brewpub.

The gallery had a plethora of fly fishing related art. Multiple artists were displaying oil, acrylic and water colors as well as sculpture. Stew mentioned yesterday that there is also a nice selection of fly fishing art displayed at the Old Forge Brewery in Danville.
We were also interested in the craft brews and blue grass music to be found at Elk Creek. We sampled the Copper Ale, Hairy John IPA and Double Rainbow IPA.

As usual the copper ale was very tasty. The double rainbow was quite good as well. Dinner was delicious and incredibly filling. We decided that waiting 2 hours for Cabinet, the blue grass band, to start was excessive, so we departed for home. On the way back to Lightstreet we stopped off at the Turkey Hill Brewery to pick up some tickets for their New Year's Eve celebration. Todd Cummings from the former Pete & Todd Band, popular locally, will be the musical entertainment for the evening. We picked up 4 tickets as the manager explained that this was the only way they could guarantee seating of a group together. First Minions to respond can purchase the extra 2 tickets.

Dureing our recent trip to the Salmon River I rediscovered another reason I wanted to get away from felt bottomed boots...The mud. Its like walking on ice. So after observing and getting the report from Stew whom himself just purchased a pair of simms boots I decided I did not want to want to tear my groin doing a split walking on the muddy trails.

These are the Simms Rivertek boots with the BOA system. They are comfortable have good ankle support and great traction on the trail and in the river. The cleat system works well but it is a crock of shit they are not included with the boots and they charge $40 for them.

Sorry no laces let alone blue ones.

The First Annual Minion Home Brew Tasting. Depicted right to left are; a fine Belgian Blond, a full flavored Brown Ale and a nice Belgian Trippel.

Some other samplings from the weekend incllude this nice Brown Trout,

a particularly difficult Brown fooled near the 17 bridge,

and this Rainbow which fell for a Challenged Sulphur at the Noisy Weimeranner Pool.

All in all a fine weekend out for the Minions who were able to attend.

Stopped in Friday at the Circle Deli @ Public Square in Wilkes Barre for a lunch snadwich and found this specimen...

known as the Owens Original, (a classic BLT on rye with the added dimension of 4 slices of gyuyere cheese. Mmm, mmm, mmmm, tasty!

After the process mapping festivities concluded I stopped off at a local watering hole to sample something called a "Dirty Hoe." More later, but it involves Hoegarden and Framboise...

And now for today's update. The WB's browns at the Woofing Canine hole were quite interested in size 14 rusty spinners this evening. I caught 2 smallish ones before returning to the chateau and my lovely bride.

Keep in mind that the net is very large...

Penns was slightly high but not to bad. The March Browns were hatching with lots of spinners in the evening but not many fell. We did have some luck on the surface though. All together a good day.

I think it is time to get the discussion started on the plan for Memorial day weekend. First off who is in? Second off where are we going? Shall we try to camp for drakes on Penns? Is the Chateau de "Lewis" for the sulfurs and drift boating on the West Branch again an option for the weekend? Or shall we do a very unconvential weekend and hand out wedgies to nerds at the "Fanime" Convention in San Jose California. We can also decide on important questions like: who has the best home brew or will John be sporting a "Bota Bag" for the weekend.

Turkey Hill Brewery

Visited the new micro-brewery adjacent to The Inn at Turkey Hill tonight.
Stew was so busy he couldn't return my phone call, but Crazy Craig was there.
Tried the Dubbel, Belgian Ale and Belgian Blond, and all were better than expected.
Had a burger which was quite tasty as well.

Witnessed the desert of the apocalypse, a porter ice cream on porter beer float. Didn't try, salivated instead.

Do try this at home! Queue sounds of angels in awe of the awesomeness that is this all beer desert.

Simms Fishing Products hosted the 1st Annual Ice Out Shoot Out video competition. Four groups of film makers were invited to Bozeman MT and given a deadline of 2.5 days to shoot, edit and deliver short film, (6 min max.) The rules - Must stay in MT, everything had to be shot within the two and a half day window, and it had to include the special prop, a shot glass with the classic Simms logo.

Aside from the handholding grabassery, an amusing film worthy of wasting 6 minutes on.

Islamorada Salt Water Fly Fishing Legend...

Billy Pate passes on at age 80.

Pate, an Islamorada resident, held the world record for the largest tarpon caught on fly rod for nearly 20 years — a 188-pounder on 16-pound tippet in Homosassa in 1982. He also was the first angler to catch all six of the world’s billfish species on fly rod.

Pate was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Greenville, S.C. Pate's easygoing personality charmed his fellow anglers and guides. Pate was renowned for freely sharing his fly-fishing knowledge at seminars, fishing clubs, and on videos.

They don't make many like that!
